The one thing every sales screen looks for

Quota attainment, stated as a percentage against a named number. A sales hiring manager reads for it before anything else and stops reading when it is missing. Give each role a compact performance line: quota, attainment, ranking, period. Attainment on its own is unreadable, because 112% of $400k and 112% of $4M are different jobs.

Add the shape of the business too. Average deal size, cycle length, new logo or expansion, inbound or outbound, and who you sold to. Segment fit decides more sales screens than raw performance does.

How do I write a sales resume when I missed quota?

Say the number and give it context on the same line. Sales leaders have all had a bad year, and they read a missing figure as a worse one than it usually was. A year at 78% against a target raised 40% mid-year, in a segment that froze, is a story a reviewer will accept. A blank space is not.

Where a year is genuinely poor, lead the role with what you can defend, pipeline generated, logos landed, a process you built, and put attainment after it rather than hiding it.

Sales bullets that hold up in a screen

Each line below pairs a result with the target it was measured against, which is the only form a sales reviewer treats as evidence.

  • Closed $2.4M new ARR against a $1.9M quota (126%), ranked 3 of 31 on the enterprise team.
  • Grew a 40-account book from $610k to $1.35M in 18 months at 94% logo retention.
  • Booked 212 qualified meetings from cold outbound across four quarters, sourcing $4.1M of closed pipeline.
  • Cut average sales cycle from 94 to 61 days by moving security review into the discovery stage.

List them, but weight them by relevance rather than by recency alone. Sales hiring managers screen hard on segment fit, and three enterprise software roles matter more to an enterprise software posting than a stronger year selling something unrelated. Keep the full employment history visible, because gaps and omissions invite exactly the scrutiny you do not want, and compress the less relevant roles to one line each with the attainment figure attached. Short tenures are common in this field and hiring managers know it, but a run of four roles under a year each will be asked about, so pre-empt it in the bullet where there is a legitimate reason such as an acquisition or a territory being cut. What sinks a sales resume is rarely a short stint. It is the absence of any number beside it. Keep the dates precise to the month, because a recruiter in this field will check them.

Use ratios and percentages instead of absolute revenue. Attainment against quota, growth percentage on a book, retention rate, ranking within the team and cycle-length change all describe your performance precisely while revealing nothing about your employer's finances. Where even the quota is sensitive, band it: a quota in the mid six figures, a book of roughly forty accounts, deals typically closing within a quarter. A hiring manager can size a candidate from that and will not press further. What does not work is dropping numbers entirely and describing activity instead, because a sales resume without measurement reads as a candidate who was never measured. If you are genuinely unsure how much you can disclose, the safe floor is percentages and rankings, which almost no employment agreement restricts. Include the size of the team you were ranked against, since third of thirty-one carries considerably more weight than third of four.
