Bar admissions, and the order of everything else

Bar admission is a gate. State, year of admission and status go immediately under contact details for attorneys, with additional jurisdictions and federal court admissions listed alongside. For paralegals, a certification block covering CP, ACP or a state equivalent belongs in the same position.

Education sits higher in legal than in almost any other field. Law school, degree, honours, journal and moot court stay on the page well past the first job, particularly at firms. Experience follows, then bar and professional activities.

How do you describe matters without breaching confidentiality?

Describe the shape rather than the party. Representing a mid-cap manufacturer in a $40M breach-of-contract dispute through summary judgment tells a hiring partner your practice level, the stakes you carried and the stage you reached, while naming nobody. Band the deal sizes, name the industry, state the procedural posture, identify your own role.

Where a matter is public record, naming it is fine. The real failure mode is the opposite of over-disclosure: a resume of practice-area labels with no matters at all, which reads as someone who has watched rather than run.

What legal bullets actually report

Volume, stakes, stage reached and your specific seat at the table.

  • First-chaired 14 jury trials in state court, including a three-week product liability defence returning a defence verdict.
  • Ran diligence and drafted transaction documents on 9 middle-market acquisitions totalling roughly $310M.
  • Built the company's first SOC 2 and GDPR compliance programme, clearing 22 enterprise security reviews in year one.
  • Managed e-discovery across 1.4M documents on a two-year litigation, holding review costs 30% under forecast.

One page for the first several years, and two once your matter list genuinely needs it. Legal hiring is unusually traditional about this, and a partner reviewing candidates reads a padded second page as a lack of judgement about relevance, which is the exact quality being assessed. Keep law school, honours, journal and clerkships on page one regardless of seniority, because those remain screening criteria here long after they would have stopped mattering elsewhere. Where you have a long practice history, group older matters by type into a representative-matters block rather than listing each one, and keep the detail on matters closest to the posting's practice area. Bar admissions and their status stay near the top, since an application into a jurisdiction you are not admitted in is usually an immediate rejection. Clerkships stay listed by judge and court, since both are read as credentials in their own right long after the fact.

The structure is similar and the emphasis is not. A paralegal resume is screened on systems, volume and process reliability rather than on matter strategy, so it should lead with the certification block and the practice management, e-discovery and docketing platforms you have worked in, along with the court filing systems for your jurisdiction. Follow with practice areas and the case volume you have handled, which is the paralegal equivalent of an attorney's matter list. Attorneys are screened on judgement and outcomes; paralegals are screened on whether the work will be right and on time, so accuracy and deadline evidence carries more weight than narrative does. Keep education brief unless you hold a paralegal certificate or a directly relevant degree. Where you have supported one practice area for years, say so plainly in the summary line. Specialist paralegal experience is scarce, and firms hire for it directly rather than training into it.
