Credentials belong beside your name, not at the bottom

In accounting and finance the letters carry weight and are searched for literally. CPA, CFA, CMA, ACCA, CA and an active state licence belong on the contact line beside your name, and again in a credentials block with the issuing body, the year and any exam levels in progress.

A CFA candidate partway through should write Level II candidate. Listing only the three letters while still sitting exams is a known integrity flag in this field. Write both the abbreviation and the full name somewhere on the page so either search form matches.

Which systems should a finance resume name?

The ones the posting names, exactly as it names them. Finance recruiters filter on the ERP and reporting stack harder than on titles: NetSuite, SAP, Oracle, Workday Financials, QuickBooks, Sage, Hyperion, Blackline, Concur, and Excel at a stated level.

Say what you did inside a system rather than only listing it. Closing a month in NetSuite, building a three-statement model, running consolidation across eight entities: each of those tells a hiring manager the scale you have worked at, which a comma-separated row cannot.

What finance bullets measure

Cycle time, accuracy, materiality, savings and scope. Those five cover almost every defensible number in the field.

  • Cut monthly close from 11 business days to 6 by automating three intercompany reconciliations.
  • Owned consolidation for 8 entities across 4 currencies with no audit adjustments in three consecutive years.
  • Built the 13-week cash forecast that flagged a covenant breach a quarter out, giving the board time to renegotiate.
  • Ran a $9M annual indirect spend review that recovered $740k in duplicate and out-of-contract charges.

The formatting mistake finance resumes make most

A wall of responsibilities lifted from the job description. Accounting roles genuinely do share duties, which makes an undifferentiated duty list the least informative thing you can write: two candidates who both prepared journal entries and reconciled accounts are separated only by scale, systems and what they improved. The other frequent problem is two pages of small type with no white space, which in a conservative field reads as an inability to prioritise.

One page through the first five to seven years, two once you are running a function or carrying a long systems history. Finance hiring is more conservative than most about presentation, and a third page reads as poor judgement however much you have done. The compression that works here is collapsing the routine duties every accountant shares, journal entries, reconciliations, variance analysis, into a single line per role, then spending the recovered space on scale and improvement: entity count, revenue supported, close timeline, systems migrated. Public accounting backgrounds compress especially well by grouping clients into one line naming industries and revenue ranges rather than listing engagements individually. Keep the credential block and the systems block intact whatever else you cut, because those are what a recruiter searches on first. Keep dates precise to the month, because a finance reviewer notices imprecision faster than most and reads it as carelessness with numbers.

Translate the engagement language into operating language before you send anything. Audit and advisory resumes are written for a partner's eye, full of engagement names, scopes and standards, and a corporate hiring manager reads that as someone who has observed accounting rather than done it. Rewrite each bullet around what the client actually gained: a close that got faster, a control that stopped failing, a restatement avoided, a system implemented. Name the industries you served and the revenue range, because relevance to their business is what a corporate team screens for. Keep your CPA and the firm name prominent, since both carry real weight, and add any hands-on systems exposure, since the standard objection to a public-accounting candidate is that they have never owned a close inside an ERP. Name the audit software and the ERP environments your clients ran, since that overlap is exactly what a corporate team is checking for.
