Technology & Software resume templates

Templates built for the way engineering resumes actually get read: a stack block near the top, a repo link that survives parsing, and shipped-work bullets that carry a number.

What screens a software resume before a human does

Tech hiring runs on a small set of modern applicant tracking systems. Greenhouse, Lever and Ashby cover most startup and scale-up pipelines, Workday shows up at the enterprise end, and all of them parse an ordinary text-layer PDF without difficulty. Ashby additionally scores applications against the posting before a recruiter opens them.

So the ATS panic that applies in other fields mostly does not apply here. What matters is that the technologies named in the posting appear in your own words, in a skills block and again inside the bullet where you actually used them. A skills list stuffed with everything you have ever touched gets discounted by any engineer reading it within seconds.

Where should the tech stack and GitHub link go?

Both near the top. Put the GitHub or portfolio URL in the contact line as readable text rather than behind an icon: an icon-only link parses as nothing at all, and a hyperlinked word leaves anyone reading a printed copy with no address.

Under the summary, a compact skills block grouped by kind (languages, frameworks, infrastructure, tooling) reads far better than a single forty-item run-on. Experience follows in reverse-chronological order. Education drops to the bottom for anyone past their first job; only a current student or new graduate puts it above experience.

Bullet language that reads like engineering work

Engineering work is measured on latency, throughput, cost, reliability or scope. Ownership language without a number attached tells a reviewer nothing they can evaluate.

  • Cut p95 checkout latency from 840ms to 210ms by replacing N+1 ORM calls with a single batched query.
  • Migrated 40 services from EC2 to ECS Fargate, dropping monthly compute spend 34% with no change in the error budget.
  • Built the on-call rotation and runbooks for a 12-engineer team; mean time to acknowledge fell from 22 minutes to 4.
  • Shipped the design-system rewrite adopted by 6 product teams, roughly halving new-screen build time.

The formatting mistake tech resumes make most

Skills matrices with proficiency bars. A parser reads the label and drops the graphic, so five-star Python arrives as the single word Python and the rating you spent layout space on is gone. The second common one is burying the strongest work in a personal-projects section at the very bottom while the experience section describes ticket queues. If a side project is the best evidence you have, put it where a reviewer will reach it.

Yes, though for a different reason than most advice suggests. The systems engineering teams run parse a clean text-layer PDF reliably, so the horror stories about resumes vanishing into a void are mostly about badly built files rather than the software itself. What an ATS-friendly layout actually buys you is a clean structured profile on the recruiter's screen: correct job titles, correct dates, correct company names, and a skills list their search filter can match. A resume built in a graphics tool with the text baked into an image gives them a blank profile to retype by hand, and a searchable database that never surfaces you when someone filters for Kubernetes. Every template in this gallery exports a text-layer PDF with standard section headings, which is the entire requirement. The rest is what you write. If a portal insists on DOCX, export that instead and check the headings survived the conversion.

Two is fine past roughly eight years, and the one-page rule is not something tech hiring enforces. What does get penalised is padding: a second page of one-line duty statements is worse than a dense single page. Use the extra room for work that needed judgement, the migration you designed, the outage you owned end to end, the team you grew, and compress anything older than a decade into a two-line earlier-roles summary carrying titles and dates only. Keep the top half of page one holding your strongest evidence, because a first pass is closer to twenty seconds than twenty minutes and often never reaches the fold. The two-column and compact layouts here are built for that trade-off, fitting more onto a page without splitting a bullet across columns. Whatever the length, put a date range on every role and account for any gap, because an unexplained hole reads worse than a short tenure does.
