Mission language is not evidence
Nonprofit resumes lose more space than any other field to values statements and commitment language. A hiring director already assumes commitment, because everyone applying has it. What they cannot assume is scale.
Budget managed, funders and grant sizes, people served, programme sites, volunteers coordinated, board interaction. Name the funding type too, because federal pass-through money, a foundation grant and individual giving impose genuinely different work.
How do you show fundraising results honestly?
Separate what you raised from what your organisation raised, and name your role in each. Grant writing, major gifts, events and institutional giving are different disciplines, and a development director reads for which one you have actually done.
Say how many proposals you wrote, the award rate, the dollar range, and the funder types. For events, give the net rather than the gross: the net is the number a board asks about, and quoting the gross reads as evasion to anyone who has run one.
Bullets that carry programme and development weight
Award rates, placement rates and retention rates are the sector's own measures, and they travel between organisations in a way narrative does not.
- Wrote 34 grant proposals across two years at a 41% award rate, securing $2.8M including a three-year federal renewal.
- Ran a workforce programme serving 620 participants a year at a 68% placement rate into unsubsidised employment.
- Grew individual giving from $310k to $740k in 30 months by rebuilding the mid-level donor programme.
- Managed 140 volunteers across 4 sites and cut annual volunteer turnover from 55% to 30%.
Licences and the credentials that gate social service roles
Clinical and case-management roles carry the same licensure gate healthcare does. An LCSW, LMSW, LPC or state case-management credential belongs directly under your contact details with the state and expiry, not tucked beside education. Add mandated reporter training, trauma-informed care certification and anything specific to the population you serve. For programme roles funded by government contracts, name the compliance frameworks you have worked under, since that experience is hard to acquire and hiring managers look for it.
