What hospital systems actually run

Large health systems hire through enterprise applicant tracking software rather than anything clinical-specific. iCIMS markets directly to high-volume hospital hiring, Workday Recruiting is common where hiring already lives inside the HCM suite, and Oracle's Taleo and Oracle Recruiting remain widespread.

All of them index text. That is why licensure and certification acronyms belong in the document body rather than in a header, a footer or a graphic, and why a hospital recruiter searching on the acronym alone will miss a resume that only spells the credential out.

Where does licensure go on a nursing resume?

Immediately under your contact details, above the summary. A licence is a gate rather than an achievement: a recruiter needs the state, the licence type, the number if you are comfortable including it, and the expiry before they assess anything else.

Certifications go in the same block. BLS, ACLS, PALS, CCRN, NRP, TNCC, each with its issuing body and expiry. Compact-licence or multi-state eligibility is worth naming outright, because it changes whether a system can hire you at all.

Clinical detail a reviewer needs from you

A nurse manager reads for setting, acuity, patient ratio, unit size and EHR. Write them into each role instead of leaving them to be inferred: a 32-bed medical-surgical floor at a 1:5 ratio is a different job from a 12-bed surgical ICU, and the resume that says so is far easier to place.

  • Charge nurse on a 32-bed med-surg unit at a 1:5 ratio; precepted 14 new graduates across two years.
  • Reduced CLABSI rate on a 12-bed surgical ICU from 2.1 to 0.4 per 1,000 line days by leading the dressing-change audit.
  • Epic Inpatient superuser for a 400-bed hospital; trained 90 staff through go-live and cut post-go-live tickets 60%.
  • Carried a 22-patient clinic panel per day while holding a 96% documentation-within-24-hours rate.

Yes, and in clinical hiring it usually should be. The one-page convention comes from corporate hiring and it does not fit a career that accumulates licences, certifications, unit types, EHR systems and continuing education a recruiter is obliged to verify. Two pages is normal for an experienced nurse, and three is accepted for advanced practice, faculty, or anyone carrying a research and publication record. What matters far more than length is that the first third of page one holds licensure, certifications and current clinical setting, because those decide whether you are eligible for the posting at all. Keep the layout single-column so the hiring system reads the licence line as body text rather than losing it inside a header, which is where these details most often disappear. Continuing education units belong in a short block beside the certifications rather than scattered through the page, where a recruiter will not find them.

List them with the expiry date shown, and renew before applying wherever you can. Healthcare recruiters check expiry dates as routine, and an undated certification reads as one that has already lapsed. The convention that works is a certification block with the credential, the issuing body and the expiry month and year on one line each, ordered so the ones the posting requires sit at the top. If a certification is in progress, say so with the expected completion date rather than listing it as held, because misrepresenting a credential in this field is a firing matter rather than an embarrassment. Where a lapsed certification is still relevant to your history, move it to a separate previously-held line so a long gap in your record does not look unexplained. Where a renewal is already booked, add the date of the scheduled course so a recruiter can see the gap is being closed rather than ignored.
