Why the portfolio link decides everything
In design hiring the resume is a routing document and the portfolio is the evaluation. A design lead opens the link before reading a single bullet, so it belongs in the contact line as readable text, with the password on the same line if the work sits under NDA.
A portfolio that requires an email request loses candidates at the first step, because nobody chases. If most of your work cannot be shown publicly, put one line under the summary saying what is available and how to see it.
Does a designer's resume need to look designed?
A little, and much less than most designers assume. The people reading it are looking for evidence you can restrain yourself. Eight-point type to fit more in, an accent colour that fails contrast on a printed page, or a hand-built grid that collapses on conversion all read as craft problems rather than personality.
The compromise that works is a conventional, well-set single or two-column layout with one accent colour and genuinely good typographic rhythm. Save the range for the portfolio, where it is actually being assessed.
Bullets that describe design work as outcomes
A bullet that stops at redesigned the onboarding flow describes a task. The version that earns a callback names what changed for users or for the business.
- Rebuilt onboarding after 12 usability sessions; completion rose from 46% to 71% over the following quarter.
- Established the component library now used across 4 products, cutting new-screen design time from days to hours.
- Ran the accessibility pass that took checkout to WCAG 2.2 AA, clearing a blocking enterprise procurement requirement.
- Art-directed a rebrand across 60 storefronts, packaging and web inside a 14-week window.
